when a knight jumPS
short film
When A Knight Jumps is a heartfelt exploration of grief, family bonds, and the power of forgiveness which follows Charlie Ford, a tormented woman who returns to her family’s home after the death of her brother, Bobbie.
Charlie finds herself estranged from her family and haunted by guilt. As she navigates through her grief and troubled past, she must confront the unresolved pain and trauma that led to her brother’s tragic death.
I worked closely with the writer/director as early as the scriptwriting stage to ensure that this deeply personal story would be told right. Pacing was key, as was illustrating the palpable tension between the family members – as demonstrated in the lunch scene above. Superimpositions were employed with intention and care to move the viewer between plot points in the present day and memories in the mind’s eye of main character Charlie.
When A Knight Jumps has recently completed post-production and is slated for release this year, in partnership with Stepping Stone House, an organisation dedicated to supporting young Australians facing homelessness and the complex web of issues that often surround it.
